We have to dare to be ourselves, however frightening or strange that self may prove to be.”
― May Sarton
Three years ago, I created a blog. It was meant to be my space—a haven to share my thoughts and experiences, and to connect with others. But my first post was about something that haunted me: hiding who I really was. Writing it felt raw, almost like exposing a wound, and instead of feeling free, I felt more trapped. The mask I had worn for years was too familiar, too comfortable, and taking it off seemed impossible.
I was the consummate professional at hiding my true self, but it came at a cost. The weight of pretending led to depression and anxiety, two relentless companions who kept reminding me I wasn’t being honest with myself. So, I did what I thought was best—I deleted the blog. I shoved the idea of authenticity into a drawer marked “Too Hard” and kept going.
But something shifted. Maybe it was time. Maybe it was the exhaustion of trying to live up to a version of me I couldn’t sustain. Whatever it was, I’m back—ready to write again, this time without the mask.
Why Is Authenticity So Hard?
We live in a world where curated perfection is celebrated. Social media feeds are filled with carefully staged moments, polished captions, and filters that smooth over reality. Authenticity feels risky. What if people don’t like the unfiltered version of you? What if your true self doesn’t fit into the world’s neat little boxes?
And so, conformity can serve as a shield, protecting us from judgment and perceived rejection. We may find ourselves altering our opinions, suppressing our passions, or behaving in ways that don’t resonate with our inner voice – all to fit into a predefined mold of what is deemed acceptable.
While this might afford temporary acceptance or success, it often comes at a significant cost the erosion of our true selves.
But here’s the thing: living inauthentically is even harder. Pretending takes energy—energy that could be used to nurture your passions, relationships, and joy.
Living inauthentically can lead to feelings of anxiety, depression and even isolation. I should know. I went from minor time off work to major burnout. resulting in two years off work and I still am recovering.
When we hide aspects of who we are, we paradoxically distance ourselves from the very connections we seek. Genuine relationships are built on honesty but how can we truly connect with other when we are not being fully ourselves?
The Importance of Values and Beliefs
Our values and beliefs act as a compass, guiding our decisions, actions and reactions to the world around us. When we stray from this internal compass in the pursuit of external validation, we risk drifting into a life that feels hollow.
Here are a few pivotal aspects to consider regarding values and beliefs:
- Clarity of Self: Understanding what truly matters to us takes introspection. Regular reflection helps clarify our core values, allowing us to make choices that resonate with our authentic selves.
- Alignment and Integrity: When our actions and beliefs align, we experience a sense of integrity. This alignment cultivates confidence and resilience in our decisions, fostering a lifestyle that reduces stress and enhances overall well-being.
- Empowerment: Living in accordance with our values empowers us to speak out against injustices, challenge societal norms, and advocate for things that matter to us. An authentic life inspires others to embrace their truths as well.
How Do We Be Authentic? The Journey Back
If you find yourself feeling disconnected from your authentic self, know that It’s never too late to embark on the journey back to who you truly are. I am proof of that. But a word of warning, it takes time and requires patience. Here are some steps to guide you
- Start Small
Authenticity doesn’t mean baring your soul to the world all at once. It can begin with small steps: being honest about your feelings with a close friend, wearing the outfit you love but feel self-conscious about, or saying no when you need to. - Embrace Imperfection
Authenticity isn’t about being flawless; it’s about being real. Allow yourself to be messy, human, and vulnerable. It’s in those moments that genuine connection happens. - Step Away from Comparison
Social media makes it easy to fall into the trap of comparison. Remember, most people are sharing their highlight reels, not their struggles. Focus on your journey, not theirs. - Find Your Tribe
Surround yourself with people who encourage and celebrate your authenticity. These are the friends and allies who remind you it’s safe to be you. - Accept Yourself – Practice Self-Compassion
This might be the hardest step of all. Learn to sit with the parts of yourself you’ve been hiding. You don’t have to love every part of who you are immediately, but you can start by acknowledging and accepting yourself as you are.
Why It’s Worth It
Being authentic isn’t just liberating—it’s healing. When you show up as your true self, you attract people and opportunities that align with who you are. You no longer waste energy pretending, and you give others permission to be themselves too.
So here I am, three years later, starting over. The blog is back, but this time it’s not about perfection or pretending. It’s about showing up, flaws and all, and celebrating the messy, beautiful journey of being human.
Are you ready to join me? Let’s talk about what it means to be real in a world that so often feels fake. Share your thoughts, your struggles, and your triumphs. Let’s build a space where authenticity isn’t just a buzzword—it’s a way of life.
I’m happy to see you back up again.
You have so much wisdom for others, I’m glad that you are actually using it on yourself.
Please continue with your blogs. I love reading them. They resonate so much.
Hi Mary, thank you so much for your kind words and loving support.
